Web design for independent businesses

I design and build websites for small businesses in Powys, Herefordshire and across the UK. Each one is planned around the questions your customers ask, written in plain English, quick to load on any phone and easy for you to update.

Planned around your customers

Before anything is designed, we work out who the site is for, what they need to know and what you want them to do next: call, book, buy or get in touch. Every page then has a job.

Fast on a phone, even on a weak signal

Ofcom found UK adults spend four and a half hours a day online, mostly on smartphones, and only 72% of rural Wales gets 4G from all four networks. So I keep pages light, compress images properly and avoid bloated page builders.

Yours to run

You'll own your domain, your words and your photos, and you'll be able to change text, images, prices and opening hours yourself. I'll show you how before launch.

What's included

Everything you get

Every project is quoted individually, so you only pay for what you need. A typical web design project includes:

  • A planning session to agree goals, audience and the pages you need
  • Help with your words, from editing your notes to writing pages from a conversation
  • A design made for your brand, not a template with your logo dropped in
  • A mobile-first build that loads quickly on slow connections
  • Accessibility built in, aiming for WCAG 2.2 level AA
  • Search basics: page titles, descriptions, structured data and a sitemap
  • Moving old pages across and redirecting old addresses so you keep your rankings
  • Contact forms, maps, booking links and social links set up and tested
  • A walkthrough so you can make simple updates yourself

How it works

Four simple steps

  1. 1

    Discover

A chat about your business, your customers and what success looks like.

  2. 2

    Shape

A page plan, the words and a visual direction, with an itemised quote.

  3. 3

    Create

Design and build with feedback points, then testing on real phones.

  4. 4

    Launch

Go live, redirect old pages, set up Search Console and show you the ropes.

Questions

Web design: common questions

How much does a website cost?

Most small business websites from a UK freelancer cost between £500 and £4,000, depending on the number of pages, the words and photos needed and any features like booking or a shop. I'll give you an itemised quote after a chat. My guide to what a website really costs explains where the money goes.

How long does a new website take?

It depends mostly on how ready your words and photos are. Small sites can come together quickly once the content is sorted; the planning and content usually take longer than the build. I'll give you a realistic timeline with your quote.

Can I update the website myself?

Yes. I build sites so you can change text, photos, prices and opening hours yourself, and I'll walk you through it before launch. If you'd rather not, website care covers small changes.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I redesign my site?

Not if it's done carefully. I map your old page addresses to the new ones and set up permanent redirects, so visitors and Google are sent to the right place.

Do you write the content?

I can. Some clients send rough notes and I edit them; others prefer I write the pages from a conversation. Either way, the words are planned around what your customers ask.
